IPL?<\/span><\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">IPL stands for &#8220;intense pulsed light&#8221;.\u00a0 It is done with a device that sends out several wavelengths of light at once, thereby treating several skin concerns.\u00a0 It reduces the damage from the sun &#8211; known as photoaging as well as several other conditions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">I<strong>s IPL the same as laser?\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">No.\u00a0 They are not at all the same.\u00a0 Laser\u00a0 is very specific and precise, sending out one wavelength.\u00a0 IPL sends out several wavelengths, thereby targeting multiple concerns at once such as redness, brown pigment and irregular skin tone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>What does IPL treat?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Acne<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Rosacea<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Broken blood vessels<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Skin discoloration<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Spider veins<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Light brown spots<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Poikiloderma (sun damage to the chest)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">What areas can be treated?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The most common areas are:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Face<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Neck<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Chest<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Hands<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>How many treatments are needed?<br \/>\n<\/strong>This varies according to the extent of the problem but usually 3-8 treatments are recommended, scheduled one month apart.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>This treatment is not suitable for:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Very dark skin tones<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Those who are sensitive to light<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Those who have seizure disorders<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Those who are taking photosensitizing medication<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Skin exposed to sun or sun tanning beds 4 weeks before the treatment<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Those who are pregnant or breastfeeding<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Those using retinoids, received facial treatments such as chemical peels, waxing or laser within 2 weeks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Those with some auto-immune disorders<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>Before your treatment:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Do NOT go sun tanning or use sun tanning beds for 4 weeks<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Do\u00a0use sunscreen every day with a minimum SPF of 30<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Do arrive without makeup<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Stop all retinoids and alpha or beta hydroxy products (glycolic acid or salicylic acid) products 1 week before.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">For the face we suggest using appropriate products to prepare the skin at least 2 weeks ahead to ensure the best results.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>What to expect<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">A special pair of goggles will be given to you to protect your eyes during the treatment.\u00a0 You will see bright flashes of light and feel a sensation of snapping elastic bands or stinging.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Following treatment, the skin can look irritated, similarly to a sunburn, for approximately 4 -12 hours.\u00a0 We will advise you as to which after care products should be used to encourage healing.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Sunscreen MUST be worn after the procedure.\u00a0 After a few days you may notice some brown spots similar to the colour of coffee grounds on the skin.\u00a0 This is normal and will clear, leaving the skin clearer.\u00a0 Redness may take up to one month to disappear, which is why treatments are 4 weeks
